After a long day selling hair, you sit on the coach in comfortable clothes. You only want to relax your brains and body to watch that blockbuster movie on TV. The scene shows your role model in the dessert. She is in trouble! In the mean time you are getting thirsty, but you do not want to pause the movie, you want to know what’s going to happen next!
Suddenly in the far distance a jeep, or is it a camel is heading towards her. You see the tension in her eyes, is this good or bad news?

Just before you can see who is coming, you get a cold shower. A break, advertisements! George Clooney drinking coffee in a $ 3,000 suit! The carefully built up excitement, is completely gone. Now what? You wait to finish the ads or you go to the kitchen to look for a drink?

But now your hubby or partner, wearing that trouser you told him to throw away for a long time, asks you what you want to drink!

Now comes the question, who will impress you more? George Clooney or your hubby in that old trouser? Who do you want the most right now!

Your hubby, right? If not, please skip the rest of this post and only leave an answer why you are not interested in your hubby anymore!

For those who did prefer their partner. This is what’s called social marketing. Communicate and interact with your target audience in a pleasant not disturbing way! The TV advertisements broke into your life and shouted by us! But your partner understood your needs for that moment. Even in a 7 years old jeans, he still looks more attractive then George Clooney, right!

So why don’t you use Social Marketing more often yourself to attract visitors and convert them into clients?

Social Marketing takes time but pays off at the end

Okay, you can start social marketing with zero budget. But you can consider to use advertisements. To build an effective social media presence takes time, effort and patience. You can’t hurry love.

Accept Social Marketing is for the long run. Do not expect short term results.

Stay focused. Select the two or three social media platforms your ideal clients prefers to use. Avoid to copy the same message over all platforms, the postings should be complementary.

Be social. Do not talk only, even if it’s about hair. Social Marketing is about interaction, keep the conversation going. So plan 20 minutes a day to read, share, comment, like, retweet the ideas of others. Share relevant content.

Remember, a simple post “Good morning” has more impact than “Buy Now Three #Bundles AAAAAAA grade #Brazilian Bundle deal $$$$$”.

You started a gorgeous hair business, but demand lacks hopes for some time. It seems there is no growth and lately new hair stores opened their doors in your market. Your hair market is saturated. What can you do?

What is a saturated hair market?

If in a marketplace, a place where people buy and sell hair extensions and services, the available supply of goods falls short of buyer demand. Marketing experts will say this hair market is saturated. The reason can be:

  1. Too many participants or
  2. People turn their back to artificial hair integrations and go natural
  3. The demographics change, more elderly people, etc.

All this will limit your profitability and potential to grow. Should you accept this or not?

Examine the situation

Unless you earned plenty of money to retire, you do not have to take your hair market is saturated. Do not make decisions overnight, but take your time to first analyse the situation.

What is the real cause of the absence of demand?

Analyse the market, use google trends to understand what is still in demand and what not anymore. Let’s take Arizona for example. Learn from Google trends, where one can see the queries people key in the search bar.

Select first the geography, in our case Arizona and start with Hair Extensions as search term. This shows indeed a deteriorating trend. Indeed, the hair extensions market is saturated! But now you have to be original, look for other search terms of developments in the hair market people might start looking for.

Perhaps more people go natural, so relate with natural hair or similar terms. Or perhaps the demographic evolutions bring more elderly people with hair loss. Or people are more attracted to wigs. You have to play with this for some time and compare the several possibilities. See the first analysis of the hair market and see what the possible alternatives.

Take your time to analyse, and use several alternative search terms.

Hair Market is SaturatedIf you found a mounting search term, do not change your service offer just like that but analyse the rivalry, who is the competition, what is their service offering. Do a market survey to understand what customers in this market like and do not like about the current providers or salons.

This will show you new commercial opportunities in your saturated hair market, so define your ideal client and start selling again.

To define your market niche, your own special place on the big market, this broad, will only work against you. A market of nearly 8 million potential clients, the dream of every business women or men in hair, but how will they ever find you?

If I write “Do Not Sell Your Hair to Afro American Women” I mean, you have to be more precise if you position yourself on the hair market. Potential clients will notice you only with a clear focus. Because let’s be honest, there is not one homogeneous hair market where you can Sell Your hair to Afro American Women. This is a market with, I estimate 8 million small markets, because they are all individuals and they all deserve a special treatment for their own special needs.

Should I focus on only one person?

Yes, and No.
