A clear lack of understanding of the western culture. Many perceive to call them your friend at the first contact as unpleasant. You can offer the best hair at the best price, but you will never be able selling hair to somebody you offended.

Two sisters living in Texas have the idea to work together. They want to put a hair extensions business plan together to start an online business. They are full of ideas and desire to start selling, but how will they start?

 

I like it when family members join forces and start to sell hair. I mean, sisters, mother and daughter or aunt together with her cousins start to sell hair. Often this creates a good team of people who connect. One party can focus on selling the hair and the other can take care of the logistical part of the business. Or to find hair suppliers.

Manage expectations

To start your hair extensions store with another person requires you manage the expectations. I recommend to sit together and to discuss what the both of you expect of this venture. Think of:

  • how important should the business be,
  • some extra money next to a day time job or
  • do you want to earn enough to pay the bills,
  • will the both of you work the equal amount of time and is this reasonable,
  • what if you must break up the collaboration?

Not necessary for bad reasons, but in life somebody might have a good reason to stop with a business. Because of family expansion or a new career opportunity, or after winning the lottery. It’s better to agree on this upfront instead to cross that bridge when you get there.

What has pregnancy to do with a hair marketing strategy? Let me tell you.

Last week Tuesday, two of my clients at the same day told me they were pregnant. I really felt privileged they shared this news with me. Also because this news is perceived in a different way for each individual. It taught me again that behind every hair business, there is a person with her or his own story. But also there are some similarities, things we all share.
First of all, there are three phases you have to take into consideration.

Awareness phase

The same goes for your clients, each individual client has her story, but she is also on her own place in time. Perhaps she is unhappy about the synthetic hair she wears and she looking for an alternative, should I go to human hair, or become a naturalista? This does not mean she is ready to purchase hair, but she is realizing she has a problem.
Clients in this phase will not look for your brand name, they are in need for some education. Some ideas and background information about the various hair extensions, the difference between synthetic and human hair. But also about the natural hair movement. What is it about?

Consideration phase

If she understands she has to look for new hair style, she would like to know more about what’s the natural hair movement, the kind of protective hair styles, hair growth vitamins etc. In other words, what kind of solutions does the market offer. This is the phase where she will notice the products and services you offer for this specific solution. She will make her long list of possible solutions’ and of course add the providers of that solution. Now it’s important you can describe the solutions your services offer for her hair problems.

Decision phase

Finally, you can start to post your brand with your offer, because in the final phase your ideal client will look for specific providers, the ones on her long list and she will cross the ones out who do not comply with her needs. Now she will notice your brand name, because this name showed up when she was getting aware she has a hair problem, she read your post about protective hairstyles when she was looking for solutions, and you were on her long list. So make sure she can find you to buy from you.
Why did I start telling you about my pregnant clients? Because I want you to realize, there are always more people with the same need, everybody is unique and deserves to be treated as a unique person, but there are always some similarities.

What is your mission?

To begin your own hair business, it’s good to start with the question why you want to start a hair business. Is it only to make some extra money, or is it to have an alternative for a day time job? It also really matters to set a deadline, a period you allow your business to grow before you decide if it’s successful or not?

So imagine you give yourself three years, to start selling hair before you lose the love to be in this business. Within three years your business should be a success, have a loyal client base and generate enough money to meet your goal, some additional money or more.

To whom you want to sell to?

Now you know how much time you have, you can decide the people you want to service. Who is your ideal client you want to make feel confident wearing your hair? Make sure you focus on real persons. Do not make assumptions, but interview people at the mall or in the gym. The more realistic the answers, the closer you are with the persons who will eventually buy your hair.

How can you be different?

Ask them the right questions, ask them not only about the hair, the texture or the price level. Ask them about their experience purchasing extensions or wigs from other hair stores, what did they like, what did they find disturbing?

Create your own website!

This will give you enough input to create an offer that will attract many visitors to your website, visitors that will love your hair and thus will make sure you won’t regret to start selling hair!

Social marketing, George Clooney or your hubby

After a long day selling hair, you sit on the coach in comfortable clothes. You only want to relax your brains and body to watch that blockbuster movie on TV. The scene shows your role model in the dessert. She is in trouble! In the mean time you are getting thirsty, but you do not want to pause the movie, you want to know what’s going to happen next!
Suddenly in the far distance a jeep, or is it a camel is heading towards her. You see the tension in her eyes, is this good or bad news?

Just before you can see who is coming, you get a cold shower. A break, advertisements! George Clooney drinking coffee in a $ 3,000 suit! The carefully built up excitement, is completely gone. Now what? You wait to finish the ads or you go to the kitchen to look for a drink?

But now your hubby or partner, wearing that trouser you told him to throw away for a long time, asks you what you want to drink!

Now comes the question, who will impress you more? George Clooney or your hubby in that old trouser? Who do you want the most right now!

Your hubby, right? If not, please skip the rest of this post and only leave an answer why you are not interested in your hubby anymore!

For those who did prefer their partner. This is what’s called social marketing. Communicate and interact with your target audience in a pleasant not disturbing way! The TV advertisements broke into your life and shouted by us! But your partner understood your needs for that moment. Even in a 7 years old jeans, he still looks more attractive then George Clooney, right!

So why don’t you use Social Marketing more often yourself to attract visitors and convert them into clients?

Social Marketing takes time but pays off at the end

Okay, you can start social marketing with zero budget. But you can consider to use advertisements. To build an effective social media presence takes time, effort and patience. You can’t hurry love.

Accept Social Marketing is for the long run. Do not expect short term results.

Stay focused. Select the two or three social media platforms your ideal clients prefers to use. Avoid to copy the same message over all platforms, the postings should be complementary.

Be social. Do not talk only, even if it’s about hair. Social Marketing is about interaction, keep the conversation going. So plan 20 minutes a day to read, share, comment, like, retweet the ideas of others. Share relevant content.

Remember, a simple post “Good morning” has more impact than “Buy Now Three #Bundles AAAAAAA grade #Brazilian Bundle deal $$$$$”.
