How to know what’s in vogue?

You can use the free tool Google has for shop owners, called “Shopping Insights”. This tool gives you per city not only demographic data, like to composition of the people who live in the town. But also, the need for certain products and services. Up to 7,000 different products.

You can even track trends to learn what products are popular in a certain period of the year. Or check if demand is increasing the last months or weeks.

What can you do?

Let’s try to see how popular the demand is for hair extensions and what you can do with this information.

First you go to the special google site

Enter for example Hair Extensions in the search bar, in the middle of the page.

This will give you an overview of all the states with the interest in hair extensions, the darker blue the more interest.
Let’s zoom in on New York,

This view will tell you not only the share of women versus men and the average household income. It will also show you the evolution of interest for hair extensions in New York.

Your clients are like ordinary people, they buy hair going through different stages. How great would it be if they allow you to join them when they go through these stages? This will allow you to know what they like, they need and do not think is important. That would be awesome! Because you will only have to share the information they need to seduce them to end buying your hair! If you agree, why don’t you invest more time to understand them?

Impossible to understand your visitors? Wrong. Thanks to Google Analytics you can see the stages your website visitors take before they buy hair. Read further if you want to use this to improve your sales.
The acquisition stage

The first stage, the acquisition stage, is all about building awareness. People in this stage are not searching for a specific product, but have a need they want to resolve. In this stage, you should focus on brand awareness. Share generic information about hair and beauty solutions.

The Behavior stage

In this stage people will engage with your business. They will use the information on your website to compare with offers from other hair or beauty-stores.

Sometimes in Marketing stages in between are identified, but in general you can use these three stages. In a brick and mortar store it’s sometimes very difficult to measure in what stage your visitors are. You need to talk to them all and find out where they are. But thanks to Google Analytics in the online world, you can learn more about the visitors than they themselves know.

You can learn know how to adapt your offer to get more sales. For example, if people from out of town show a growing interested in your hair offer. You can use this information to make a special offer for them. A tailor-made advertisement campaign anything that uses the interest from this group. For HowToSellHairExtensions I noticed a growth of interest for selling hair extensions by women from Kenya. You can Start Your Own Hair Shop, Because I Believe in You!

If you are launching a hair business or managing your hair shop for growth, new business ideas run through your brain each and every day. A better after sales idea or an awesome design idea for your webstore! Sometimes, we come across a few particular ideas that we just can’t stop thinking about – because they are that good!
Constant brainstorming, rapid note taking and visions of success are all symptoms of this.

Many times, however, after a couple of days or even a couple of months, the motivation behind these great ideas just seems to die out and never evolve into the next step. It’s kind of sad, because for sure many of those ideas were awesome, money-making ideas and would have helped your future clients. It would have helped you to start your own hair shop.

If we can understand why this happens, then I think we can stop the momentum from slowing down and start taking things to the next level. Here are 5 main reasons why I think ideas in our head take a turn for the worse:

1. We’re Not Seeing Any Results

We live in a time where we all want things to happen FAST. For example, a search for Brazilian wefts takes only 0,00014 seconds in a Google search and it’s what we’re used to.
Ideas take time to materialize, so quitting or giving up before anything even begins to happen is a sure-fire way to kill a great idea. Remember what your goals are and why you were so excited about your idea in the first place.
One trick I learned is to map out a road map. Write down the steps you think it takes to get to where you want to go and you’ll see that you’re only in the beginning phases of the entire process. But, seeing the rest of your “roadmap”, including your goal, on paper will definitely give you the boost you need to keep going.

2. We’re Unsure of What to Do Next

This happens all of the time, but it definitely shouldn’t stop us. We’ve just reached a hurdle, and we just should do a little more research or simply ask someone for help, in order to jump over it.
Also, you can go back to your “road map” and see what the next steps are. And remember to take things step by step.

3. We Just Don’t Care Anymore

For whatever reason, you’ve lost sight of why you’re working so hard. When it comes to motivation, here’s what you can do:
o Remember why you were so excited about your idea in the first place! Imagine what life will be like at the end of the tunnel.
o Read an inspirational book or watch an inspiring movie.
o Display your favourite quotes. On my PC I have a post-it with: “Fall seven times and stand up eight” written on it and seeing this gets me going again.
o Talk it out with someone. If you’re feeling low on energy, sometimes all we need is a pick me up from a friend.
o Take a quick break. We often work on something so much that we forget why we’re doing it. Take a day or two off and you’ll often see the motivation come back in no time.

4. We’re Not Sure if Our Idea is as great as We Thought it was

Maybe you’re having second-thoughts about your idea. Maybe it’s not as awesome as you thought. This is the thought that pops into my head more often than the others and it’s definitely a downer. But here’s what you can do to keep your idea alive.
Simply put – think positive thoughts if you think positively, positive things will happen to you!
Also, you should realize that you’re not going to succeed unless you give it a try. What’s the worst that can happen?

5. We See Someone Else Doing Something Similar and It Seems Better

Okay, so someone “stole’ your idea, but it doesn’t matter. Because:
o That fact that you see someone else doing something similar to what you had in mind is actually a good thing!
In fact, it shows that it was such a great idea, that others are already using it to make money for themselves. There’s a proven market for it and now it’s your turn to join in. All you have to be better.
o The Website Designers Theory: Ever noticed how many website designers there are in your neighbourhood and most of them are in business for many years already? This proofs: you don’t need have a unique idea in order for it to succeed. And if there a need for something, there’s always room for more options and solutions in the market. For this I always recommend to compete on service and quality. You can more easily differentiate on these selling points than on price.
o Lastly, all you have to do is make yours better. Learn from the competition and think about why people will choose to visit your extensions shop and purchase from you, instead of from someone else.

I know this was a rather long post and I do apologize about that. But I hope you would agree that staying on course is essential to achieve your goal to start your own hair shop. Jumping over hurdles is the backbone for the success of any business or blog, which is why I spent some extra time on this post.

Free Hair Extensions for Your Hair Salon

Free Hair Extensions for Your Hair Salon

Did you always wanted to open your own hair salon and to sell your own brand of hair extensions? Do you want people to talk about your brand when they visit their hair salon? Take note of the next tips and make your dream come true!

Location

This is, like in many businesses key factor number one. You can start your hair salon anywhere you want, but why wouldn’t you go for the easy way. You will find enough challenges on your path to a successful salon owner.

If you are doing your research walk through town. Look for a location with enough parking spots and the right and enough people passing by. Do not worry, you will earn back the extra time or money you invested in the right location.

You

Now you found the location, it’s time for a serious talk with yourself. Ask yourself the question. Are you the kind of person that is made of entrepreneurial material. Try to work in a salon for a day and focus only on the hair salon owner. Join a network meeting from salon owners and learn from them.

If you have doubt, better to wait and to continue with your current job or study.

Money

The reason to start a hair salon is most often to generate money. To pay the bills and to invest in the growth of the business. Your initial investment, or every cent you spend should be well considered. A luxurious salon does not mean the most expensive salon refurbishment in town. Improve the style over time if needed. You and your team make the business, not a chair that is too expensive for you to keep on smiling. Remember you need to get the word out so keep some money aside to invest in marketing.

Promotion

Do not think because you know you are open for business, your clients know also. Your brains might fool you. You will believe the whole world thinking about your project and can’t wait for you to open your doors. But truth is, even your best friends have their own priorities and they might forget your big day.

Tell the world who you are and where they can find you, and what they miss if they forget to enter your salon.

Test your marketing message, too often what is clear for you isn’t for others. Keep on improving your marketing message. Do not feel ashamed to ask others what they think you mention. It will surprise you how people understand your words.

Are you ready to open your hair salon?

Good luck and do not forget to leave a comment to tell me you are open for business!

How to find small business ideas to sell hair

How to find small business ideas to sell hair

Money is important for a lot of things. Before you look for cash it is better to work on your small business ideas first. Work on a small business at low cost right from the start. By doing so, you will keep your enthusiasm and you can start selling hair very fast. Let me guide you to find small business ideas for selling hair or the beauty industry.

New Product or Service Development

Your business will only succeed if you have a new product or service your market needs. Only companies like Apple create products nobody needed, until brought to the market. You will have to listen well to your potential clients.

Girls talk

The first step is to gather your best friends, and some of their best friends and start to talk hair. No need to share your ambition for your own store. But find an excuse to talk hair with a group of say 10 girls. Prepare this gathering with a list of items you would like to have their ideas about when they leave. Think about what they like and do not like about hair extensions and stores. Or the way they search for new hair products. Keep the conversation going and make notes to get small business ideas. Read the chapters about how to listen to the market and potential clients in my eBook.

E-book Start your own hair business in only 10 days

Desktop research

Now you have an idea about the needs of a significant group of potential clients. Use this information to perform some serious research. Use Google or social media and write down your observations from the girls talk session.

You will have a list of:

  • suggestions,
  • ideas,
  • bad and
  • good remarks about the hair extensions stores.
Now you must turn these into small business ideas for hair stores. Validate the remarks with the desktop research. Again, do not forget to make notes.

Your own experience

If you already sell hair or any other beauty product. Do not forget to consider your quality assurance process. What is not going well and what activities lead to customer complaints for example. You can learn from your mistakes. This is the moment to learn and to convert these mistakes into small business ideas. Do not forget to talk to suppliers, they might have some interesting ideas too.

Market research

If you review the outcome of the Girls Talk, your desktop research and your own experience, you have a complete picture of the needs. The best way to confirm these observations is to perform a market or customer research. Part of this market research are your competitors. Analyze them and learn from them.

Pick your small business ideas

Now you are almost done, you have a lot of information and a lot of small business ideas. Now you should put the list away and do not look at it for 72 hours. Do something different and let your brains do the work at the background.

After 70 hours, you take a blank piece of paper. Write down the criteria you will use to check your small business ideas.

Think of:

  • most identified customer needs
  • product improvements most needed
  • the benefits to your target market
  • the technical feasibility of the idea
  • the level and scope of research and development required
  • the profitability of the idea. What is its potential appeal to the market? How would you price it?
  • where the product fits in the market. Is there a gap? How close is it to competitor products?
  • the resources it will need in development

Check all the ideas of your list using these criteria. You will see some will disqualify and others will stay relevant.

Now you have one or two well thought ideas you can start to work on for your small business.
