The first group everyone knows, this group consists of red, blue and yellow. These colors form the basis for all the colors we can see.

Secondary colors

This group of colors we all learned at nursery school. Mixing the three primary colors gave me at least a wide variety of other colors like green, orange and purple. I proudly took them home on my new shirt!

Tertiary colors

This group of colors forms when mixing a primary and a secondary color. This also gives lovely names, like Vermillion, Chartreuse and Amber.

From cool to warm colors

All colors have a warmth value assigned to them, classified as warm or cool.

Warm colors range between red and yellow. Which include various versions of those colors in addition to orange. This also comprises colors such as brown and tan. These are “warm” colors in that they suggest a sense of warmth. For instance, fire is associated with warmth, and it burns between the spectrum of reds and yellows. Warm colors can also promote a feeling of aggression and are considered bold.

Cool colors are given this designation because of their calming nature. They’re often associated with winter climates or water. These colors range between blue, purple and green. Most grey colors fall into the cool category as well.

Use the lightness of a color

When you increase or decrease the lightness of a color you will get various tints and shades of a hue. Tints occur when white is applied to a color. Shades, when black is added to a color.

Use the contrast, to play with colors that are opposite of each other on the color wheel. A button in a contrasting color draws the attention. If you have a buy button on a red page, make sure you subscribe or you buy now button is yellow.

Complementary color pallets

Colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel, known as complementary colors. The high contrast of complementary colors creates a vibrant look, especially when used at full saturation.

Compound color scheme

A compound color scheme is created when you choose a color and the two colors adjacent to its complementary color. While similar to a complementary color scheme, the addition of adjacent colors helps to create a more interesting color palette but with less contrast.

Avoid vibrating colors. Vibrating colors result from pairing two colors with high saturation together that may be complementary to one another. It creates a glowing or moving effect, which also can be hard on one’s eyes.

Avoid color combinations with insufficient contrast, dark letters on a dark background for example.

Use contracting colors to draw the attention to call to action buttons. Do not show your button in full color if the visitor still needs to finalize another action. Like to fill in a form.

Let the button change colors if the visitor hovers over the button. This will again draw the attention to the button.

Purchase cost Hair Extensions

It all starts with the purchase price of the hair you bought from the wholesale supplier. This price depends on the quality and quantity. The more kilo’s or bundles hair you buy, the lower the price per bundle. That is economies of scale. Here you can make the difference from people who buy retail volume, say 3 to 5 bundles. Better to wait some time. Get more orders in from your clients and negotiate a nice purchase price per bundle with your supplier.

The payment transaction fees

Next to the purchase price, you have to pay for the payment services. Especially when you have a wholesale supplier from abroad.
If you pay using PayPal, there might be a 3 to 5 percent payment charge. If you use Western Union or Money Gram you will have a similar charge. The first, PayPal has a buyer’s protection. If something goes wrong with the shipment and you do not get what you expected you get your money back. The wholesale supplier has the opportunity to explain they did everything to make sure you received what you expected.

MoneyGram and Western Union do not have any buyer’s protection. This is a payment method many suppliers prefer. Because they do not run the risk to lose hair shipment and receive no money. This way of payment you can consider after you build up a good relationship with the seller. For higher amounts this is even cheaper.

So, on your notebook you now have two amounts.

  • The purchase price of the hair bundles
  • Plus, the payment transaction fees.

The shipping costs

You know buying from Alibaba or AliExpress will most often not charge you for shipping cost. Thanks to the high volume of these platforms, the suppliers offering their hair benefit from very low shipment prices. But please do not forget, if your hair has to be transported from A to B there are expenses involved. Sometimes these expenses are already included in the selling price, but very often they are charged separately. The last allows for more exact pricing, because if you agree on a shipment with more days involved you will pay less. If you accept no insurance of the shipment, again you will pay less. This freedom will allow you to save hard cash on your shipment charges. This is not possible if the seller does not separately charge for shipping, but has it included in the selling price per bundle or kilo.

Now we have three amounts on your notebook:

  • The purchase price of the hair bundles
  • The payment transaction fees, plus
  • The shipment charges.

What is the price per bundle after payment and shipping?

Now you have all the figures you need to calculate how much you need to markup your purchased hair extensions. The original purchase price, the payment commission or fee and the charges for shipping.
There are two methods to calculate the markup per bundle.

You can calculate with every order the total cost per bundle. All you have to do is to divide the total amount by the number of bundles you are going to sell. This will give you the amount per bundle that will generate not a loss and not a profit on this transaction. This way of calculation is simple, but you will have to recalculate your selling price after every new purchase.

Or you can estimate the number of bundles you are going to sell this whole year and estimate the total amount you are going to invest in hair, plus charges. If now you divide the total cost by the total number of bundles you are going to buy this year, you will have a stable cost price of the hair. Your cost price will be fixed for one year.

Luckily you started the year with a good business plan. So, you have a good idea of all the operational and marketing cost it takes to keep on doing the hair business. Every bundle you are going to sell should also compensate for these expenses. Here we use the same formula. You divide all the operational and marketing expenses per bundle you purchased. Together with the cost price per bundle, you will have the minimum price you should charge not to make any loss or profit.

Wait! Stop! You are in this business to make a profit. So again, you have to continue reading because now we are going to discuss the part where you are going to make a profit!

Even when you plan to only sell hair in a brick and mortar store, it is better to protect your hair extensions or wig brand with the right domain name.

  • because when your brand becomes well known in town, others will steal your clients by creating an online hair business with exactly your name;
  • when you want to grow and go national you need online presence, and you domain name will allow you to;

How can your client find your hair store?
On the internet are many, many webpages to be found. Every online hair store, or hair and beauty blog has multiple pages or postings. So how will your ideal client, be able to find what she is looking for?

That is possible thanks to the domain name of your hair store. When your ideal client, types in the browser (chrome on her desktop or safari on her mobile) the browser will check the IP address for your hair store domain. Every device, computer, printer, mobile phone or other internet connected machine, has a dedicated address. This is called the IP address. It is like your home address, this helps others to find you.

Now when her browser has found the IP address it will connect with your hair store. The server of the hosting company, like Bluehost or direct at the servers of Shopify, will send the page with the requested information to the browser of your client.

This is only possible when your store has a domain name.

How does the domain name look like
In the olden days, your domain name would start with www (world wide web), to be sure it is not seen as a mail program. But those days are over. Now the domain has the name of your store plus an extension. So myhairstore.com. Here myhairstore is the mid-level domain and the .com is the top level domain or in short TLD. The TLD can be the country code, shop, or many others now. But most people check for .com as TLD. Keep this in mind when you register the domain name of your hair and beauty store.

I analyzed the nearly 600 stores that signed up for a Shopify store, the last two years. The words most used are:

Hair 18%, Beauty 6%, Store or shop 4% and Extension 2%

Hair extension 1%, Hair extensions 1%,Hair beauty 1 % ,Hair shop 1% and Beauty shop 0.4%

The first letter of the hair store:

The most used letter to start was the letter S (nearly 1 out of 10 shops). Like Silky or Slay. Followed by the letters M and B with 8% and L with 7%., with examples like Mama or Moma and Beauty. Hardly nobody started her store using the letters X,Y,Z or U., but “Your Dream Hair Store” your client will certainly remember.
