Frustration, disappointment and sadness, just a few emotions I had to deal with the last months. Every time when I talked to an enthusiastic and ambitious girl or women interested to start her own hair business, but needed some support to make it successful. For me the last combination is the absolute number one. Bill Gates’s gift from heaven, after I make a mistake. A typo? I erased an excellent sentence? Or I deleted an email from a customer, I always use Ctrl Z, and undo my last action! How about you?

Imagine how your days will look like, with this undo option in your pocket or purse? Wouldn’t the world be a much better place? I bet there are voters in some countries who now wish they could undo their vote or latest tweet.
However, this seems a feature that is not available for all of us. But that doesn’t mean it is not possible to mitigate the consequence of your latest action. It does require some more work than only to press ctrl-z, but it’s worth it. I can tell you.

Think relational and not transactional

The best way to be able to start all over, or to undo the consequences of your last, not intended, action is to invest in the relationship. Do not think transactional, do not see your clients or suppliers as the opponent. Do not only think on how you can maximize your own profit. Better to invest in the long term. Put the mutual benefit of the relation first and confirm this every time again.
Do not only contact your client when you have an offer to sell, but also to check on how they are doing. Invest in the personal relation with the sales woman or man from your hair supplier. We are human beings, we are social animals, so use this in the relation with your environment.

Ordering Wholesale

I see a growing number of wholesale suppliers, who do not want to close anonymous deals using Alibaba but prefer to build a long-term investment with their clients.
If the client has been ordering wholesale hair and it does not meet the expectations, or the shipment is seized by customs. These sales people who invest in long term relations because they understand they should look for a mutual solution.
It works both ways, if you ask for the pricelist of a wholesale suppliers only this will not help you to create a good relationship with them. A relationship you need so bad to get the best hair, every time you order at the best price. It will also help you to have a wholesale supplier who will think of the mutual benefit in case something went wrong. Follow each other on social media, for example. This will make the process ordering wholesale much smoother and at a much lower risk of disappointing.
Because good hair can make or break your relation, my advice to think relational with your clients and suppliers.

If you are in the hair business you must have a logo. This is a beautiful design that tells the viewer in one blink of the eye who you are and what you sell. They should think, I have seen that brand before. The more a stranger sees your logo, or brand, especially on different platforms, the more they will feel connected. They will feel your brand can be trusted. And that’s good because they will buy from you faster.

The header of your Facebook Business Page is the anchor for your Followers. I just mentioned the importance of one style. This helps people to stay connected. But think of the impact if you replace your furniture in the living room. What is the reaction of your friends if they visit you? “Hey, did you buy a new sofa? How nice!” Your living room feels brand new again, but with the same furniture. You can do the same with a new profile picture, but with the same style, colour setting or theme.

 

People love to see themselves in a mirror

Bulls in the arena, or in the field, the immediately respond if they see a red flag, fluttering in the wind. The same goes for your followers. Publish a post and make sure the title acts like a red flag. Try to challenge the reader. Instead of “See my new bundle deal”, try “Do you like to pay too much for your hair?” It’s important to experiment with the titles.  Facebook Insight helps a lot because it will tell you the kind of titles that earned the most interaction, like shares, comments or likes.

Nice your followers read you post, but you had a purpose when you wrote the post. You want your followers to do something. The great thing is, this is exactly what your followers want to know. Do you use the Instagram Private option? Every day, I am in contact with women who are selling hair. I love it to hear their stories.To see their Facebook and Instagram. And to listen to their struggles and to work towards solutions. Some of them are in business for some time, but many just started.

One of the most heard struggles is the lack of sales. They have beautiful hair but nobody is buying the hair. How come?

To whom you want to sell?

My first question is to whom you want to sell your hair? Who are the ladies you want to look good and what do they have in common? Some people have the ambition to sell to the whole world. Others know the focus on a certain group helps to engage more. Get a real connection with your Ideal Client and they will buy from you.

I also like to ask for the social media you use, what kind of content do you share? Do you have pictures of yourself with creative hair styles. Do you publish pictures made on a photoshoot? Or do you just share pictures you found on the internet?

I recommend home-made pictures. Pictures of happy clients, your own hair or from a photoshoot.

To share pictures borrowed from the Internet do not help to tell the visitor who you are and why they should buy from you. And you want visitors to like you and your brand right, instead of a model you are not able to deliver the hairstyle.

Why you put Instagram private ?

Everything is fine up till now, but then too often I get an experience I do not understand. After the call with you, I like to visit your Instagram account. I want to see those pictures and to like them and share them. But then, you block me, you only give access to a limited number of visitors. Your account is private.

If you do all the effort, to publish nice pictures, please allow at least your Ideal client to follow you. Publish pictures with bundle deals, and some funny images that help your Ideal Client to connect.

You can make a private Instagram account, but please also open an account for your brand. You have something beautiful to share with the world, do not forget to put your account on public!

I have a dear friend who sells hair from the house, and she has a gorgeous 5 years old princes. Thanks to the holidays, her daughter is not going to school and is home all day long. That’s not a problem of course. In fact, it opens the possibility to spend more time together, quality time.

But the other side of being a working mother is the commitment to your clients and your company. Sometimes this is not that easy to combine, to put it mildly.

 

Last summer I shared a post about how to manage work and kids during holidays, but that was summer! Sun, nice weather and everybody happy. I can tell you the options to distract and entertain your 5 your old, are much less in winter. Especially when the winter comes with a lot of fog. Kids and bad weather is a totally different story! Right?

 

Dora the Explorer

My friend has used all the options, even Dora the explorer came to help. But after 3 hours or more watching cartoons, as a parent, you want your child to change focus. Go play with a doll, or any toy. Or be creative and paint a nice drawing for grandmother.

All these options sound like great solutions. But now suddenly your little princess really starts to act like a royalty. Was she able to watch cartoons all by herself, now she wants you to join in the play. Or she wants to make the painting only if you make a drawing for her too.

You are the parent, but ..she makes more noise

And that was exactly not what you had in mind!  Now you play your role as a parent and you say no. You play the nanny’s playbook and tell her “No, you must play alone, because mummy is working”. Great, you feel relieved and even proud of yourself.

Too bad this feeling only lasts for 3 minutes, because now you must deal with a crying descendant. Later she will impress the audience of the opera, but today she is ruining your day. You have mixed feeling, regret, but also impotence, how to solve this?

“i recently just started with this hair business and i think I am struggling mostly with marketing my business and growing it into something bigger. I feel that it is not growing fast enough. I am in a process of setting up a website in hopes that that will help that business get bigger so some tips would be great.”

This question I received by email from a hair store owner in South Africa, and I must tell you, this is not the first time I receive this question.

Set Goals

As business owner, it is very important to set goals. Goals that define when and how much you want to achieve your targets. When is about the time, this year or 4 hours a day. How much can be about the money you want to earn, or the number of visitors to your website.
My first response, after I get the question, is how fast you planned to grow your hair business?
What was your goal and how did you think you would achieve this goal?
Suppose as an example, you want to sell $ 200 a day, or $ 4,000 a month. This can be a great goal.
But there is a calculation behind this sales projection. This $ 4,000 can be 10 clients buying for $400 hair, or 20 clients with an average order size of $ 200. You can even get one level deeper and predict the kind of items. Brazilian, front closures, etc.

How many clients did you plan?

Let’s start with the first level of the calculation, the number of clients and average order size.
I assume you have set your Ideal Client. The person you want to engage with so they will buy your hair. Let’s say, this Ideal Client is used to buy hair at an average expense of $ 200.

Now check the following:
Do you have all the hair in stock? If your client orders but you do not have the hair in stock, you will not make your $ 4,000. Work on a plan to have enough hair in stock, or schedule a call or WhatsApp with any client who orders hair you not have in stock. Explain what happens and tell them you will re-stock soon. Tell them they will not only get a notification, you also offer a discount on their next order. And sign them up for your newsletter.

Would You Like to Make $ 30.000/month for Only $ 29/month?

How many visitors do you need for one client? If you are selling hair, you will see in your analytical tools many people might visit your site, but only few buy the hair. Calculate monthly how many visitors you get on your site and how many clients order hair. This will tell you the average number of visitors you need for one sale. For example, if you have 2,000 visitors a month and 10 clients in a month, you know you need 200 visitors more to get one extra client and to grow your hair business faster.

Do you clients purchase for less than $ 200 as foreseen? Try to optimize the buying experience with some cross or up selling. Free shipping for all orders above the $ 200. Or offer a 10% discount for the next order for every order above $ 200. I am sure you can find more attractive options. Make sure to use a clear call to action, a big yellow button that offers free shipping for orders above $ 200 up if they have $180 in their shopping cart.

Now you can see exactly where you must focus on.
Do you get too little clients in? Work on your content to get more relevant visitors.
Or if your average sales is too low, go for interesting cross selling offers with the interest of the client in mind.
