I am sorry ladies, but it’s still true. The Queen likes shopping, but Cash is King. Track your cash flow. How much cash is going in and leaving your business? Improve the cashflow, by reducing operational expenses and increasing cash at hand by less receivables.
This strategy will free cash you can use to invest in business opportunities. Now you can buy that very attractive offer that comes only once on the market or invest in a new outlet.
Never sit still

You will notice you have enough in common and plenty of differences to benefit from a warm relation with the competition.
The hair business is a highly competitive market, sometimes it feels there are more people selling hair, than customers! But every disadvantage has an advantage, also in the hair business.
The great thing of competition is, you can learn from or steal from them or work with them. .Isn’t great to have access to so many entrepreneurs all active in the same market as you. Observe them, analyse them, love them or pick your fights.
Swap inactive clients and get a fresh source of ideal clients
Every business has clients who did not find what they were looking for any more.
Increase your hair sales in 90 days or less
Trust me, every business has this kind of potential money in the books. If 25 to 30 % of the old clientele is interested to re-stablish the contact with you, 50 to 70 % is not. These people have a clear need of buying hair and to look good, but are looking for other hair stores. That could be you. So offer your competitors to buy these contacts from hem. You are fresh and full of new ideas, big chance you can sell these clients some nice hair bundles! New promising leads for you.
You can reduce the investment in these leads from the competition, by offering the competition your clients that are in active. This way you still make money, from your old inactive customers. You can sell them or use them in a swap with the inactive clients from the other hair store.
Upsell
You sell hair extensions, but perhaps you also sell other beauty & hair products. You will not be the only one to sell other services to make your client look and feel good. Why not exchange these clients too. If you sell bodywraps and the competitor is doing nails, work together with your client base. Offer the other hairstore your bodywraps clients and allow her to contact your clients with nail services.
The swapping of clients could be the step ahead of a joint venture, a business where both of you combine strengths and outsource the less developed parts of each of your businesses to the other hair store.
Sell the services from the competition
You can even think of selling the services of the competition under your brand name. They will perform or supply the goods, but under your brand. The competition , or your new partner, will be very happy to share a part of their profit with you. You have the network and the clients and they the products or services.
Make love or at least talk with each other
You are competitors, but that does not mean you shouldn’t talk. Go to networking events, say hey to the competition, Because this will help you to see their struggle. Even if they do not tell you, you will be able to see and hear more if you are on a friendly basis with them. Invite them to your store and make them feel comfortable and make them talk while you listen! And improve your business at the same time.

Last week I spoke with a young entrepreneur in the hair extensions business, called Megan. I had met her before, but we never had time for long real talks. Often, I was busy on my way to somewhere else and she always was interacting with her clients.
This time I met Megan after Church, after the ceremony there is always time for tea or coffee. I like to stay and to meet people and to discuss the service and of course what happens in the world. A service is a moment to thank the Lord, and to find inspiration. I do need the money too, but I also work because it’s my duty to support others. The network I have, my knowledge and experience, I got it all from the Lord to help others. So, first I thank HIM on Sunday and later with a cup of coffee in my hand I try to make it work.
The hair extensions business
Megan, works very hard and makes long hours, as many entrepreneurs do. But for Megan there is an extra challenge, Megan is dyslexic, she has difficulties to read and write. Not because she didn’t go to school, but because she has a malfunctioning.
This dyslexic takes a lot of energy and extra organization. For verbal communication no problems, but written gives stress every single time. People not familiar with her dyslexia often respond by looking down on her. It’s like if you do not communicate well, you are less intelligent. People disqualify you!
But despite all this stress, all the struggle Megan faces, she managed to launch and grow her own business. It was impressing and Megan told me how she managed, with as little writing and reading as possible.
Success is in your head
She shared with me her grandmother had told her how to succeed. First, her granny explained her success or happiness is something in your head. Only you feel you succeeded, if you manage to beat your own expectations, you feel the success. And this makes you feel happy! Many people measure their own performance with the achievements of others. This is not the best way to measure success. Better to measure the success of your effort based on your own achievements. Why? Because this is something you can control. You can’ t influence others. Many try this every day, but does that make you happier?
So first set your goals and beat them! Of course, do not cheat and set realistic goals.
As mentioned the best way for success is to improve your own achievements, day after day. Megan told me this was her secret. Every day she tried to outperform the day before. No need for writing a log. All she did was to schedule more talks, contact more leads as the day before. Make less mistakes, or better sales pitches. This was not only an effort she could do on the job, it also helped her to feel better.
This stimulated her and helped her to grow her business. All without facing difficulties because it was so hard for her to write.

How many times you have been thinking on how to increase your hair sales? Did you look for new ways to market your hair brand, or new markets to explore? Big chance you overlooked the least expensive way. Reactivate your old clients and increase your hair sales.
Work with the people who purchased from you before, but for some reason stopped. Reactivate thee contacts, it will not hurt you. You have to invest some time to trace them and to tell them the story why you think they should come back to buy from you.
One make the list
Depending on how long you are in business, or how you keep record of your clients and leads you need to prepare a list. Check your old files, calendars and sales records. Even your emails.
Place them all on the list named ” increase your hair sales ‘. The great thing is you can contact them all without the need to introduce yourself. They know you and your product, all you need is a good excuse.
Two think of what to offer
Tell them about a new feature, the new hair extensions or bonding method and you got their attention. Or tell them about the hair trend for the next summer or year. Any excuse, linked to your services will do. The investment in old contacts is one of the best investments you can do in your business. Why? This investment is very cheap because you already know them, and they know you.
In the Industry there are some rules of thumb telling that 25% of the people you contact will say yes, if you activate them to buy from you again. 15% is interested in your offer and feels okay if you promise to call later.
To know how long it will take before a client is in-active; think of the period a client might keep the hair installed. If after a couple of months she did not return. It’s your turn! Contact them.

Take One The set
Invite the client who did a testimonial to your store or another location if you prefer this. Because you do not have a salon or shop. Give her a special treat, she deserves it and … she will spread the word!
Make sure, before your client arrives to record the video, you have the set right. Look for a quiet place without too much background noise. Make sure you have a wall or background image that is in contract with the hair of your client. After all, what is a testimonial video about hair without hair!
Place a comfortable seat for your client and check what the best location is for your camera. Do not forget, it’s all about your client. She should be in the center of the attention.
Take Two The recording
It is not easy for everybody to tell a story on video. Many people, who are very relaxed when they talk, freeze when they see the camera. So you start with some dry runs. Do not tell them you did not on the recorder yet, and try some simple questions,. Make them feel at ease. Ask for their name and where they come from. Make some small jokes, they do not need to fall of their chair, but their cheeks should be more relaxed.
The start of recording of the testimonial should be the introduction of the client. Ask her to tell her name, surname and where she is from. Let her do the talking. This all helps the viewer to connect with her, especially the location helps to connect.
Make sure to encourage your client to speak, nod with your head when she is talking. If you only stare at her without any emotion, because you only think of your next question. But she will most likely stop talking or in the best only give an exact answer to your questions. Let her speak in an enthusiastic.
Make sure you ask the questions most of your ideal clients will be thinking of. This again helps the audience to connect and to build a relation with the client doing the testimonial. The more trust and confidence, the higher the conversion ratio or sales.
What you can do, is to ask questions like. My biggest struggle in finding good quality hair is …. Or What I like in this hair brand is …. I would recommend this brand
.
Prepare the questions in advance, but do not share the questions with the client. This will make her more natural and less giving well prepared answers. Nothing wrong is some uhhh’s and hmm’s.
Take three Share, share, share
Load the video on YouTube and share the link with the client who performed in the hair testimonial video. She will love to share your video too.
Share the video on your website and your own social media platforms, keep track of the likes and shares. This will help you to make a better video next time. Do not forget to keep an eye on your sales, because at the end of the day, that was the objection in the first place.

What is the solution?
First, what is the solution you offer to the world. Do you have a new hair brand that is an improvement for people who already buy your product or services? Or did you find a solution for people in another market? Did you discover a new market or niche?
Make sure you understand the group of people you found a solution for. This is essential to start the communication about your hair brand. You need to know to whom you are going to talk.
What is your communication ambition?
Now you know the people, your ideal client, you are going to talk with. If you know your ideal client, you can plan your marketing strategy. What will be the format you will use, what is the content and how will you create the marketing message.
You can only manage your campaign if you have goals and if you can track the impact of your campaign on these goals. You need to decide where you are going to market your message, how and how often.
What channel?
There are so many channels to broadcast your message about the hair. TV. Newspapers, Magazines, Radio, Internet and within every group there are many variations. For example, social media, but what platform? Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat ….
Facebook is the biggest platform in number of users, but Instagram and Pinterest are more popular under women. But … 70% of the Facebook users logs in every day, and only 22% in Pinterest. To make it easy, most people use Pinterest to check about products!

The story about your hair brand
You have a story to tell, the story about the solution you offer with your hair brand. Make sure you tell your story in the format your audience is ready to listen for. Pictures in Pinterest, short story twitter, video Facebook. The same message but another format.

No need to have the marketing budget of Procter & Gamble or Loreal. Be creative, you can afford a lower frequency if you are more creative. Or at least original. Outperform the rest, no bundle deals but something fresh! Ask a local celeb to take part in a YouTube movie of your hair extensions party shot in your neighborhood. Make sure people will recognize the location and even the people on the clip or pictures. This makes it more shareable.
You can also contact a school magazine, local newspaper or beauty magazine for your community and place content branding. An article about your brand, instead of an advertisement. If people trust the magazine, they will also trust your hair brand promoted in the magazine.
If you want to get your hair brand on websites, make sure you adapt the format to the design and format of the website that will host your story. People developed the skills to ignore advertisements, so make sure you follow their design, font and colors. This will increase the Return of Investment and number of clicks.

You are busy to build your hair business, but there are so many opportunities you want to make sure you grab. You eye that awesome little store in the center of your town that is still for rent. You are looking for the best hair supplier and you found a market niche nobody else have been thinking of yet. If you only had more time in a day!
The secret is, you do not need more time to build your hair business. If you still would need more, there is no way to get more hours in a day. 24 hours that is the max. You should make fewer but better choices about your business activities. Do not try to do too much because you fear you will miss opportunities. Do not drown in opportunities. Better to upgrade the use of your time.
How to upgrade your use of time?
Do start to tell “But I do not have enough time!”, because you have all the time. No need to ask for more time, better to be more selective where you spend the time on. Take some time to think about where you spent your time on. Find the things what matters most.
What is creating value in your hair business?
It is generally known that 80% of what you do, leads to 20% of the result. For example, 80% of your clients will generate 20% of your revenue. 20% of your clients will generate 80% of your revenue. This goes also for expenses, time spent etcetera.
We are going to use this wisdom to improve the quality of the time you spent. Now you can focus your time on the highest valuable activities.
The easy part is to think of those activities (that consume 80% of your time), everybody is doing, but are not generating high value. The time you use for these activities will generate low results, let’s call them D time.
Think about:
- sorting mail
- checking low level email (newsletters you once signed up but do not give added value)
- customer service to people who never bought from you,
- dealing with supplier that will not be your preferred supplier but you are too polite to ignore them.
- Check the news at office work
- Lost files, lost things
Delete these tasks and free up your calendar for more valuable activities. If not needed skip them, unsubscribe, write one farwell letter, avoid dealing with this again. Or find ways to automate them.
Delegate if somebody else can do these activities better.
Defer, delay it some time.
Design it out, get rid of spam mail, set rules on your mail app. Make tutorials for your clients, improve the FAQ on your website, or create an introduction kit for new clients.
The remaining 20%, remember D time absorbed 80%, are activities that generate value. 80% of the result so this means with only one day a week you generate 16 times more! Figure out what of these tasks you can delegate to somebody, or instead of having one on ones, organize meetings with people with the same needs. Think about a webinar.
Do not invest time in the design of your hair business website. Better to focus on how to build your hair business and have someone else create the website.
If you discover you often reply to clients the same way, with a little personal note, make sure you have email templates. Save time, but not the message.
But there is still room for more improvement! The B time!
With 20%& of the C time you generate much more result. Most of these are the items you have been working on to improve in the previous step. This time you are going to use them.
Use only standardized emails, look for a partner to build your hair business, investor or somebody in an industry that is complementary to your service offering.
Now every quarter go through your list and see if you freed up time in the D class and have moved activities from the higher to the lower value activities class. From B time to D time for example. This will free up time, without losing the result!
Now leaving only 1% (20% of the 20%) the time spent in this class is going to generate top results! This is the time for your business strategy, your top revenue drivers or time with potential investors. This time is not urgent, but will have huge impact.
Structure your week to grow your hair business
Look for one day a week to Focus on only the two highest levels of activities. The a and B time class. Make sure you have enough energy to work on these important and high value activities. Do not lock yourself up, be sure you communicate with people but on the agenda, you only have the A and B time activities. These activities are different for every business. It does help to stay focused so turn of the email, use the voicemail and off the TV. If possible, go out, visit the library or local café. This will not only help you to focus, a change of environment will also free your unconscious a huge brain capacity 200 times larger than your conscious! No upgrade needed, it’s all available.
The rest of the days you have push days, days you work to push your hair business one step ahead. If you do only have push days you will get a static business without growth potential or worse that will dissolve over time. If you only have focus days, you can be very happy but with no business to run.
Schedule your focus day in your agenda and plan on every other day 90 minutes at your best time of your day. In these 90 minutes, you work on two items that matter most for your business and one that is important for you. After all, it’s crucial to keep a healthy working / private life balance.
Make sure you stay committed to this strategy, look for a coach or other person to keep you on track. Keep in mind your own rhythm, ask for help if needed and attend to the actions needed, in a step-by-step way. Do not fear to ask others to help you to stay disciplined.

To play with your kids or to grow your hair business?
As a father of two your kids, too many times I told them, not now I am busy, later today! And boy I felt bad when I gave this answer. Between you and me, I prefer to play with my kids above anything in the world.
My 9-year-old son has a huge interest in everything on earth and in the universe. I love to discuss with hem if there is life on mars. Or to crawl on our bellies through the forest to spy on the secret life of a rabbit. My 10-year-old daughter is a self-made YouTube queen, like so many of her age. She completely disapproves my YouTube clips. I should be honest, she is a natural talent and I will never be!
But okay, I like to work and too many times when they wanted me to come out of my office and to join them my answer was. “Not now!”
I can imagine, if you have kids you will recognize this internal fight, you prefer to spend time with your kids, but there is also work to be done.
Grow your hair business and play with your kids
I found a way, I planned my tasks in my calendar with enough free time, and work earlier in the morning. I also outsourced some tasks to play with my kids and to discover the world with them.
How do you balance your time to grow your business and to enjoy being with your kids while they still need you? Because we all now, one day you will ask, hi kids shall we play? What will their response be if too many times you said not now?
