This week I had a nice chat with Patience, a very nice and inspiring girl from Ghana. She has the plan for some time to start a hair business in Ghana. Her main struggle? The competition is selling hair for a lower price than she can do. She needed hair suppliers in Ghana that would enable her to offer hair in the same price range.

Patience was already testing her marketing skills, because she has Facebook en Instagram. She had posted already some pics of hair, wigs and cosmetic products and the response is encouraging. In her store she will offer one stop shopping, from purchase the hair or wig to install. It’s very nice to see people interact after you posted the products you want to sell. But now she needed the hair to stock her store and to start selling!

Understand the market

Patience did her job well, she started to perform a market survey. This was mostly done online. She followed some stores that are selling already hair extensions in Ghana online. She checked their prices and read how the customers responded in the comments they left behind. The latest was important because this gives a certain understanding about the quality and aftersales of the store.

Tip: Always perform a market survey to check what the competition offers and not only check the price, but also the quality of service and hair.

There is no hair police

This study educated Patience a lot, she could build for free a good understanding of what customers like, as they shared in the comments on social media. She also obtained a feeling of the price range she could offer. For example the prices of wigs in Ghana, Now she knew how to price hair bundles to sell online.
The next step was to create a list of all the stores and to pick some offers she wanted to compare. The challenge is to make the right comparison. There is no standard of quality in this Industry. Unless you buy all the hair and test the quality yourself, you need to work with some assumptions about the quality. Here the client feedback could be of help, but is only an indication, not a standard.

All you need to do is to make a grid, with the lengths in the rows and the competitors in the columns

This will show you what the price range is, but beware, the quality of the hair is not included in this comparison. To make the difference more visible you can even put it in a graph.

Patience will use this overview to set her price range for the market and to adapt the marketing message. A couple of years ago, I got to know a very nice and ambitious girl, Vina. Vina was the owner of Mystique Hair Collection. Her company was, as she told me, created by a woman for women of all ethnicity. Last year Christmas I found a book under the Christmas tree called “Getting Things Done”. A guide full of strategies to have more energy, be more relaxed and with more focus. With getting more done with less energy. When reading the book, I was thinking of you. I know so many of you have a full-time job and struggles to find time to make your own hair business grow. I have been receiving many mails and apps, with the question how to launch and grow a hair business, if the day time job is consuming all the energy.

The solution for everybody running a small hair extensions business

With this header I am lying to you, because this strategy works for everybody, with a small hair business next to a full-time job, with a full-time occupation as shop or salon owner, even as CEO of a big hair business.
The whole concept is to use your brain, the main consumer of all our energy, only for what it is best in, making decisions. Not to store information and to do lists.

You probably have been thinking or even dreaming about it for a long time. “I have to write a letter to the bank to get some more financial room.” But you kept on postponing this. Once you managed to get yourself together to write the letter and you mailed the letter to your bank manager, how did you feel after you clicked the send button. Relieved, happy and ready for the next challenge, right?

This strategy we are going to use to be more productive, more energetic and more relaxed. The good thing is you do not need to learn new things, all you need to do is to make more use of the basic skills you use all day long. You know how to focus, if you must. You know how to write things down, if you have the time for it and you know how to make decisions, if you only would know what the right choice would be.

In short, the strategy is based up three objectives:
– To capture all the things that need to get done,
– Direct yourself to make front-end decisions about all the things that come your way, during the day,
– Curate and coordinate all those things.

The book “Getting Things Done” from David Allen has helped me a lot, and I want you to benefit from my experience. In a couple of posts, I will share with you the strategy and I would love to hear from you if it works for you too. The idea is that you will feel in control of your hair business and the rest of your life, instead of feeling buried by all the stuff you have to do.

Last week, I had a long chat with Jennifer. Jennifer lives in Florida and she loves to sell hair. It has been her dream for a very long time, but she never found the time to start. Jennifer is a young mother of a sweet daughter, and being a single mum is not easy.

Working too hard for the money

Jennifer works in a local warehouse, where a lot of people from her town have found a job. It was not easy to get a job in the warehouse. The standards were high, you had to work fast, and you were not allowed to make mistakes. One mistake and you are out. The money was little, and despite her hard work, not enough to pay all the bills. And she could never pay for herself if she goes out with her friends. To make enough money she had to accept night shifts. She did not like this, because this means she had to bring her daughter for the night to some friends she trusted.

Boss was eating away her energy

It was frustrating her, that even she worked very hard, she would never have enough money. Her boss really liked being a boss, but not in a positive sense. No encouraging or a kind word, not even a good morning. He only spoke to her if he had something to complain about, never a nice talk. To little orders picked, or not sealed well enough. This really made her feel down, and at moments like that she felt more like a machine than a human being. She always felt the energy leaving her.

Dream to sell hair

On her way home, in the bus, she was always looking at the hair of the other woman. For everyone she had a styling advice in her mind. That girl would look great with a bun, or that woman should go natural, or the girl sitting next to her would look awesome with some extensions. It gave her energy and kept her going. It was her dream to sell hair and to stop working for a boss. She wanted to launch her own salon or hair store.

Life sentence

But when she got home and picked up her little daughter, she was too tired to work on her dream. She really needed her rest, and this kept her far away from analysing the market, testing hair and launching her own store. It started to frighten her, would this job stop her from starting a new life? Would this job be her prison, and would she have a life sentence with that awful boss?

Turning point

This view of the future really scared her, and she contacted me to see what was possible. How she could turn her dream into reality and get out of that imaginary prison.
The start was with finding energy, she could not afford to work less hours, or to care for her daughter, but the time in between could be used more efficient. We agreed she would start to allocate at least 30 minutes a day to work on her hair business. This is not much time, but now she could focus 3,5 hours a week, working on her dream thus was a great source of energy.

Steps

She started to write down all the steps:
– needed to find and nurture leads, people who might be interested to buy from her;
– to purchase the hair from wholesale companies;
– the logistics of getting the hair from the supplier all the way to the customer;
– the marketing and maintenance of the social media and webstore

She started to write down every step of one of these activities, using an excel sheet. And every next manual activity followed the previous one.

For example, for finding leads

1. Post weekly on social media
2. Contact everyone who comments on post or sent DM
3. Obtain whatsapp number of these leads for swift contact
4. Start the conversation to understand more better their needs
5. Inform them about hair offer

Create energy for free

This preparation did not cost her money, but it did several positive things. It helped her to understand and fine tune the hair business, thus saving time and money and it gave her energy.
She did not write down all steps in detail. This would keep her away from the most essential activities. She needed to have a clear overview, from start to end of the steps within a certain activity. Even without having her business up and running, Jennifer was able to write down the process.

I get many questions on WhatsApp of women and more and more men, about how to start selling hair. But last week I received a more specific question. On Friday from Kenya I received a very warm and open app from MBaire. At times she manged to make me even laugh while reading. She shared with me her desire to open a cosmetic shop.

Research the competition before you beat them

Her first step was to do research on the market, what is the current offering from other stores and shops. This is a smart way to discover how she can be unique. After all, there are many girls selling hair, but you only want them to buy from you and not the other girls. So make sure, like Mbaire is doing, to perform your research on the competition.

Select a couple of competitors, and prepare a grid like included in the all-in-one hair extensions package. Not only check on the kind of hair they are selling, but also the way they market the hair, the location and many more items.

If you list, as the grid enables you 3 or more stores, you will be able to spot what are the opportunities for you. What are the needs from the clients the competition is not acting upon. Is their shipping time very long, think on how you can do better. Do they fail to give good after sales, beat them by investing in your client relations and keep your customers happy and loyal.

Keep an eye on the competition

You would be surprised how many stores forget to check their competitors. If you believe you know what your customers need, but forget to check what the market already is offering. Big chance you will start selling hair but end up losing money.

So Mbaire started the right way, research the market and make the steps only as big as your wallet or time schedule can handle.
