Too bad, because 8 out of 10 of them will fail to make their dream come true, they will keep on trying to sell hair. They are not able to sell enough hair to earn back the stock they bought. Why? Because they have the wrong mindset. In this post I will tell you how to get the right mindset and how to start selling at a nice margin too.

Follow your dream, so bad so sad.

The inspiration to start selling hair, most often comes from the desire to buy gorgeous hair. I can tell this after talking to hundreds of women. Nearly always after the sentence: “I want to start selling hair” the second sentence is “ where do I find suppliers? ”.

If this is the case for you too, you skip one important step. A step of the highest importance. You will fail to ever sell one weft of hair, if you skip this step. Yesterday I finished the launch of a website for a fast-growing Chinese Hair Supplier. It was a great project to work on. Not only with the design and launch of the website. Also with the growth of visitors to this website for a Chinese Hair Supplier.

The company knew what they wanted and that helps a lot when you design a website. Sometimes people only want a website and they need help to define what kind of site. This time was different. The principal, a Hair Supplier had some clear ideas about what they needed. They wanted to have a website they could scale up following the growth of the business. We shared quite a few WhatsApp messages. Based upon the first ideas and suggestions from the principal I first prepared a mock-up. The website is responsive. This means regardless the device the visitors are using like, phone or desktop they will enjoy the content without any limitation. Thanks to a combination of a web shop module and a blog module, visitors can for example zoom in on the products. But the Chinese company also wants to publish blogs to share their expertise about hair and the hair business.

You also get a cheaper monthly price when you buy at least 12 months of hosting, so the free domain just makes it even better. If you decide to get the free domain, just continue to the next step as you can buy your hosting and get the free domain all in one step.

The “Basic” package is most likely all you will need.

2. Buy hosting for your hair or beauty blog.

Setting up a WordPress blog on Bluehost is very easy. First, we will talk about the costs of blogging:
To receive the cheapest price to start a blog, then choosing the “Basic” plan is really all you need. It’s only $3.95 per month through my link (due upfront in full) if you sign up for 36 or 60 months.
If you sign up for a 24 month plan, then the price is $4.95 per month. If you sign up for a 12 month plan, then the price is $5.45 per month. $5.45 is still extremely affordable and it’s a great plan to choose (especially since you get a free domain at this price still!). If you are unsure about blogging, I would sign up for the 12 month plan as this is still a great price and very affordable for one year of blogging. If you purchase a 12 month plan, your total price is only $66 a year, which is still a great price. Plus, you still receive the free domain name when you sign up for 12 months or more which saves you money.

To start your hair or beauty blog the Basic plan is all you really need for now, so skip the Plus and Business Pro plans as they are more expensive. You can always change it later to a different plan if you want to (and just pay the difference), so there is no need to sign up for extra that you do not need.

The other item you may want to pay for when it comes to blogging is Domain Privacy Protection, which is only $0.99 per month. This is so that your contact information stays safe.

Other than the above, you do not need the other items that Bluehost sells, so I would uncheck any of the extras that are listed.

I want to reiterate why you should purchase at least a 12 month hosting plan. Month-to-month is less effective, and I highly recommend signing up for a minimum of 12 months for many reasons. By signing up for a minimum of 12 months, you will receive a free domain name, lower pricing, and you won’t have to deal with an expired website after each month. For example, if hosting is not renewed or if the card expires, then your website is down and you risk losing business (visitors/traffic) when you pay on a month-to-month basis. This week Kahagi from Kenya asked me where to source hair at favorable prices. The aim was to purchase the hair at conditions that allows women outside Nairobi to purchase gorgeous hair at a fair price.

What are the retail prices of hair in Kenya?

To answer the question, of where to find suppliers who offer hair at advantageous prices, we first must analyze what the price level is. The challenge with comparing the price of hair extensions or weaves is the quality element. You can compare the price in Ksh, but you do not know the quality. Except you first buy all the hair and test the hair after installment. But this is not really an option.

The various A grades will not help you either, it works to compare the hair of one single supplier, but you cannot compare these grades between different manufactures or suppliers. There is no hair police, so nobody checks if the A grades are a realistic reflection of the hair quality.

Today, I will only analyze the price of the hair based upon the price. Some stores do and some do not share their prices. For the purpose of this post I compared the prices of some products that seemed to be comparable.

What does the competition tell you?

I explained it was difficult to compare the hair of all the stores and re-sellers. But this does not indicate you have no figures you can use to estimate the price range for your hair. If you know these prices you will be able to start the calculation of what favorable prices you need.
For Kenya there are a lot of stores that publish the prices of hair, weaves and wigs on their website or Instagram account. I simply visited the sites and made a list of prices for Body Wave, Straight and Kinky, plus some wigs.
This exercise gave me for example the average retail price for body wave 16, 18 and 20 inches:

  • 16 inch, Ksh 9,000;
  • 18 inch, Ksh 9,800;
  • 20 inch, Ksh 10,800;

You can make a nice bundle deal out of this!
These prices come from stores that have a certain reputation already. From a marketing point of view, you could consider offering the hair for a lower price. Next to the price of the competition, you need to take into consideration other points of the service offering. What about the transport, the expenses to store and conditions to maintain a good hygiene around the hair? What kind of after sales do you offer, will you accept returns, or only exchanges.
All these factors you must consider if you set your retail price.

How to calculate your retail price

You can use this information to guide you to calculate your selling price.

Human Hair at one third of the retail price

I can offer a bundle of Body Wave for say, one third of the retail price. In other words, you will have nearly 70% to cover expenses, like shipping (say USD 30 for the first 3 kilo and USD 10 for every extra additional kilo) and payment. Add the other operational and marketing expenses and you could have room to or lower the retail price if needed given the market, or you could have a higher profit margin.
If you want to be a middleman and purchase the hair to re sell to other stores or salons. You will have to control you expenses and keep an eye on the market. You will have to share the margin with the reseller. Here you can obtain a higher margin by purchasing the hair at a lower price by buying more kilos.

Her mail ended with “Are you able to supply, and what can you supply?”. This did not feel good! Let me explain why and what the next step will be.

Again, this was a great start, you start with what you want to achieve. Selling Hair Extensions! This line is a great opening for an elevator pitch. In one sentence you make clear what your ambition is, no doubt about what you want.

Are you able to supply, and what can you supply?

Let me start to tell you, I can supply. I have info-products like eBooks, Templates and other documentation to guide hair sellers. I have time to share with you as business mentor and I can supply hair. Direct or thanks to hair wholesale suppliers.

But does this answer your question? My answer is generic, and it will not help you at all. But it is the only answer I can give, because I do not know what you need!

The secret to return home wealthy

If you want to sell your hair to every person that enters your store, or every visitor of your webstore, you need to listen. You need to make it a habit to go to the places your potential clients like to visit. Study them, chat with them about what is keeping them happy and what are their struggles. Talk about hair and find out what makes them pleased or unhappy about their current hair supplier.
Make notes and write down not only what they are saying, but also how. What kind of words they are using to say what they are looking for? But also, the words they use when they explain what makes them annoyed about hair and hair stores.
Only when every page of your notebook is full you may return home. Or so much sooner when you have a good understanding what the women in your town like and do not like. I can tell you, when you get home, you are much wealthier than when you left home in the morning.
Your notebook is full of secrets from your potential clients that will buy from you. All you need to do is to highlight in the notebook the observations about “I wish or the I hate”. What do they want or wish when buying hair or after they got the hair? What do they not like or even hate when they have bought hair or when they are in a hair or beauty store?

And when I say you return home wealthy; I mean rich because with this information you can do miracles and you will make a lot of money.

How to Sell hair to Every Visitor of your Store

Your notebook is the secret of your success. Thanks to the time you took to listen to these women and the effort you take to understand their needs; you will triumph. Your will be able to buy the finest hair your client can wish for. You will always be able to join her in the conversation when she tells you she wishes to buy hair extensions. Because you knew already in advance what she was looking for.
You can tell the world you are selling hair using the right words and the appropriate marketing channels. Because you know what kind of words your clients use when she talks about the hair she wants. You can use this similar kind of language in your marketing and advertisement messages.
Because you know what she does not like, you can avoid these words or use this experience to give a service that is free of anything that makes her feel uncomfortable. You are always one step ahead of the competition.
